Soccer Academy

The goal of the Soccer Academy program is to provide young soccer players with an environment to develop their skills to reach their full potential. Our academies offer comprehensive programs designed to challenge and inspire each player, regardless of their current level of play.

In addition to technical and tactical training, we place a strong emphasis on character development, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Our academies believe in helping players grow not only as soccer players, but also as well-rounded individuals.

Whether players are just starting out or looking to take their game to the next level, ECSD soccer academies are the ideal place for student athletes to achieve their goals. Join us and experience the best in soccer training and development available in Edmonton.

Mission

Academy Mission:

The Louis St. Laurent Soccer Academy will focus on technical development of Soccer players. We will help these players perform at a higher level with particular emphasis on Long Term Player Development (LTPD). The program will incorporate technical development with physical training to develop accuracy, speed, power, development and/or training in coordination, flexibility, agility, aerobic endurance, and aerobic power.

WHAT IS LTPD?

LTPD is a model of athlete development that parallels what doctors and psychologists have long used to better understand human development: as a series of distinct stages, which takes us from infancy through to adulthood. A person’s abilities, behaviours and emotions, as well as their understanding of the world around them, varies from stage to stage.

Similarly, experts in sport science have identified seven stages of development — each with its own physical and psychological characteristics —that form the basis for LTPD. When young soccer players are able to train and compete in an environment that’s appropriate to their stage of development, they not only perform at their best, they also have more fun.

In other words, LTPD is designed to give players an optimal soccer experience at every stage by putting their needs front and centre.

WHY LTPD?

We don’t expect kids to compete in spelling bees without first teaching them their ABCs. When activities and expectations don’t match with a child’s developmental stage, this can set them up for failure.

The same is true when young children are thrust into a soccer environment that over-emphasizes winning at the expense of developing skills and having fun. The negative consequences can last a lifetime: Some kids develop bad habits and poor skills and can become discouraged. Many don’t achieve their performance potential. Others end up leaving the sport altogether because they don’t enjoy the game.

LTPD gives all players the best chance of success in soccer by tailoring training, competition and coaching to their needs at the appropriate stage of development.

When children learn the right skills at the right time —supported by a caring soccer community of parents, coaches, officials and volunteers —they become more confident in their abilities and have a lot more fun. This means more of them will grow into healthy, active adults with a lifelong love of the game.

Examples of Technology That We Use:

First Touch Soccer Training is an essential part of developing the right skills to succeed on the pitch when playing the game of soccer. If a player cannot control the ball on the first touch they end up chasing after the game instead of controlling the game with confidence. So much of successful soccer training revolves around getting players the first touches on the ball they need to build muscle memory that means they will be strong players.

SmartGoals are blue and orange LED lighting goals that can be controlled, programmed and automated by a mobile app. As the ball passes through the gates, the sensors switch off the lights or change the colour of the lights. Professional teams such as Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, Schalke, Fenerbahce, Viktoria Plzen, Bate Boriszov and others are using the gates to create an interactive training environment for their players. While looking for the target, players are required to focus and look out for the next target.

SmartGoals help players improve in the following areas:

  • Awareness
  • Positioning
  • Cognitive abilities
  • Decision making
  • Possession
  • Coordination
  • Agility
  • Reaction speed
  • Stamina
  • and more!

My Background:

I was born on March 17, 1973, in Prijedor, Bosnia & Herzegovina. As a youth I was often seen playing with a soccer ball and developing skills on the pitch. Ultimately, I made the ball my best friend!

I joined the youth programs in the 3rd Former Yugoslavia Division to further my development. At 17, I was offered my first professional contract for FK-RUDAR that played in the 2nd Former Yugoslavia League.

In 1992 I joined 3rd Division SC Norderstedt in Germany and reached qualifiers for 2nd Bundesliga. My time playing for Germany from 1992 – 1997 gained me the experience and understanding of the multi-faceted aspects of soccer.

In 1997 I immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta. Where I quickly fell in love with the culture, people and country.

After playing for almost 12 years in Canada, an opportunity came for a new challenge teaching the skills and principles that I acquired to youth soccer players. This opportunity has allowed me to bring my passion and love for the world’s most popular game.
