Program Overview

The Drama program at Louis St. Laurent offers students a sequential acquisition of dramatic skills and the exploration of a variety of theatre disciplines, including: voice and speech, movement, improvisation, playwriting, character, directing, theatre studies, theatre history, and theatre production. Students will develop skills in these disciplines through rehearsal and performance and will also develop an understanding and appreciation of theatre as a traditional art form.

Junior High

Drama 7 

Is an introductory course in theatre and dramatic arts. Emphasis will be placed on developing and working within an ensemble (team/group). Students will explore genres of movement, voice and speech, physical theatre, and storytelling. Appropriate for all ability levels!

Drama 8 

Will continue to build ensemble skills while we explore character work, improv, physical theatre and acting! Through this course, students will hopefully discover more self-confidence, more respect for the talents and opinions of their peers and have a greater engagement with the world around them. At the JH level the aim is to move beyond just teaching students basic skills but teaching them to put aside their fears and believe in themselves with confidence and integrity. Appropriate for all ability levels!

Drama 9 

Will expose students to the 6 Dimensions of Drama, diving into each dimension in detail. The goal for Drama 9 students is to discover their inner explorer wherein they are to build self-confidence, respect the variety of talents of their peers, and have a greater respect for the art of theatre. At the JH level the aim is to move beyond just teaching students basic skills by teaching them to put aside their fears and believe in themselves with confidence and integrity. Appropriate for all ability levels!

Senior High

Drama 10 

Introduces students to basic skills of theatre performance through which they will develop their creativity, communication skills, concentration, and self-confidence. Through the creation and study of a variety of theatre texts, students will focus on movement, speech, improvisation, character, theatre studies, and staging.

Advanced Acting 15 (5 Credits) 5 Credits

Advanced Acting 15 provides a continuum of theatre experiences that moves well beyond the introductory or exploratory activities outlined in Drama 10. Advanced Acting 15 expands the specific skills related to performance, and is designed to extend the foundation skills outlined in Drama 10. The major difference between Drama 10 and Advanced Acting 15 lies in the learning strategy employed in these courses. In this sequence, all the learning objectives will be achieved by production experiences.

Technical Theatre 15

Offers students the chance to engage in non-acting roles that are required to realize complex theatrical performances. Students will be challenged to think and react creatively and critically while collaborating with teams to support the production and performance aspects of theatre. Students will have the opportunity to explore multiple technical roles such as costumes, makeup, sound, lighting, set props, & stage management. Students will also develop an appreciation for the role and impact of the technical aspects of theatre as a means of communicating with an audience. 


Drama 20 

Drama 20 builds on the foundational skills developed in Drama 10, offering students an intermediate exploration of dramatic arts. This course focuses on enhancing students' abilities in characterization, movement, voice, and technical theatre. Through more complex improvisation, scene work, and performance projects, students will deepen their understanding of dramatic structure, character development, and theatrical production. A variety of theatre texts, ranging from classical to contemporary, will be explored through monologue and scene work. Drama 20 encourages creative risk taking, critical thinking, and collaboration, preparing students for advanced studies in drama and related disciplines.

Advanced Acting 25 

Advanced Acting 25 provides a continuum of theatre experiences that moves well beyond the introductory or exploratory activities outlined in Drama 20. Advanced Acting 25 expands the specific skills related to performance, and is designed to extend the foundation skills outlined in Drama 20. The major difference between Drama 20 and Advanced Acting 25 lies in the learning strategy employed in these courses. In this sequence, all the learning objectives will be achieved by production experiences.

Drama 30

Drama 30 is an advanced course designed for students who wish to refine their dramatic skills and deepen their understanding of theatre. This course focuses on sophisticated character development, advanced acting techniques, and the complexities of directing and production. Students will engage in intensive scene work, explore various dramatic styles and genres, and take on leadership roles in theatre production. Drama 30 emphasizes creative independence, critical analysis, and collaboration.

Advanced Acting 35

Advanced Acting 35 provides a continuum of theatre experiences that moves well beyond the introductory or exploratory activities outlined in Drama 30. Advanced Acting 35 expands the specific skills related to performance, and is designed to extend the foundation skills outlined in Drama 10, 20, and 30. The major difference between Drama 30 and Advanced Acting 35 lies in the learning strategy employed in these courses. In this sequence, all the learning objectives will be achieved by production experiences.
