Junior High

Instrumental Music - Grades 7, 8, 9

Ever wonder which instrument was actually made for you? Now is your chance to find out. We are opening up our full inventory for a total-immersion trial. You won't just see them; you’ll play them. Explore every option, find your perfect match, and lock in the instrument that will take you through the year. Don't just join a band—launch your career on the instrument you love. No need to rent off-site. We have everything you need, right here at Louis. St. Laurent.

 

The goals of our music program are:

  • To develop individual musical understanding and skill
  • To provide students with opportunities to strive for excellence in group performances
  • To enable students to evaluate and appreciate a variety of music

The best time to try band is in grade 7. If you are considering coming to Louis St. Laurent in grade 8-12, and have no prior band/music knowledge, no worries at all! Please contact the office and they will put you in touch with the designated band teacher. Music is an inclusive and safe space for all. We strive to provide opportunities for all students who are interested! 

High School Band

Band 10, 20, and 30 at Louis St. Laurent Catholic Junior/Senior High School build on the skills developed in junior high and provide students with a rigorous, rewarding senior high band experience, offering meaningful performance opportunities and enrichment beyond the classroom.

Instrumental Music 10 (5 Credits)

Full Year band class combined with Religion 15 and CALM 20. This allows you to receive multiple credits during the same block of time

Play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments including double bass. This program is designed for students studying woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Music performance will be studied through concert band music and its various genres. The students will gain knowledge through learning theoretical knowledge, music history, and engaging in practical applications of the creative process in a performance setting. Students will perform at concerts and compete at festivals, including such venues as the Meyer Horowitz Theatre, and within Louis St. Laurent School.  

Instrumental Music 20 and Instrumental Music 30

Full Year Programming 

Instrumental Music 20 and 30 continue the senior high concert band program and are offered as full‑year courses during regular instructional hours.

Students participate in multiple performances throughout the year, including a formal concert each semester. 

Instrumental Jazz 15/25/35 (5 Credits) 

This program is designed for students studying Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Bass, Double Bass, Drums, Guitar and Piano. Music performance will be studied through the jazz idiom and its various styles. The students will gain knowledge through an introduction to jazz improvisation, studying jazz theoretical knowledge, and engaging in practical applications of the creative process in a performance setting. Students will perform at concerts and compete at festivals, including such venues as the Meyer Horowitz Theatre, the Yardbird Suite, and within Louis St. Laurent School. Students must be enrolled in Instrumental Music 10/20/30 and have the recommendation of Mr. Fan in order to participate in this course.  Students must also audition for their spot in the Louis St. Laurent Senior High Jazz Band.

Co-requisite: Instrumental Music 10

Play jazz, soul, blues, funk, Latin, swing, and more.

Perform at concerts, professional venues, tournaments, pep rallies, and school events

Drumline 10/20/30 - General Music-Honours (3 Credits)

This course is offered for credit when sufficient student enrolment is met.
No prerequisite or co‑requisite is required. Students learn marching snare, bass drum, quads, quints, and marching cymbals, with numerous performance opportunities both on‑site and off‑site throughout the school year.
